SAND RIVER CATCHMENT FORUM

Speaker presentations from meeting on Monday 21st June 2010.

Summerised report back on the Spaanschemat Voor at the Sillery site.

Brian Ratcliffe gave a quick overview of the history of the Sillery development site from about 7 years ago. Then to the present where the sticking issue with the current developers is the access to the "voor" for the general public. The proposed residential erven extend onto the "voor" which has been illegaly filled and buried by the previous ownwers family. The developers petitioned the Provincial Minister of Transport and Public Works in December 2009, he being new, did not over rule his department's decision and conceded a "provisional protection" to the "voor".

In Feb 2010 a land claim was instituted by Hassen Sadien for the site. His grandfather lived on the property. The Sadien extended family was successful for the Odekraal applicatants, in over turning that proposed development site.
Subsquently a stop order was implemented on any proceedings by the developers on the Sillery site.
The Land Claim court ruling is this Friday 25th June. The Friends group have met with and discussed the issue with the land claiments and have a letter of support from the Sadien family for the presservation of the "voor" as a heritage site.

In the interim, a sub committee (of which Brian is a member) have to advise Heritage Western Cape on a number of issues going back in this proposed development site.
