15/03/2009 - John Fowkes reports "The channel from the Westlake Pond down to the railway bridge is choked with myriophyllum with a coating of cladophora. Just before the end of the channel, to the south west of the mouth of the Westlake River, we came across an interesting sight.

There were about thirty carp, all over a half meter in length. They were grazing on the surface weed and had cleared a circle about twenty meters in diameter. We sat watching for about 15 minutes. They were eating around the edge of the cleared area.We were able to get close and photograph them. Leading into the circle was a cleared area also about twenty meters wide leading down towards the main vlei".

See the area John is referring to.

Angling Permits at GZENR - 2008
Anglers require an permit to fish at Zandvlei. These are available from most fishing specialist shops and  any Post Office for R60,00 and are valid for a year. The applicant needs their ID when filling out the form. The receipt needs to be attached to the permit. Bait collection permits are also on the same application form. They are therefore very easy to obtain. The daily bag limits and descriptions are in the brochure.

These brochures are current for 2008, as of Jan 2008 and available from the GZENR during office hours 021 701 7542.
Ignorance of the law is no excuse, most of the permit money goes back into fish research by Marine and Coastal Management.

Responsible angling is sustainable.
