Zandvlei trust

 World Water Day – Litter cleanup on 24 March 2007. 

A Zandvlei Trust  community initiative, working with the City of Cape Town.

To celebrate World Water Day, we decided to do a litter cleanup on Park Island again this year, to add to the information we gathered last year.
Thank you to all who came to make a difference. 
Also thank you to Mrs Meyer from the Citys Muizenberg Cleansing dept for supplying the black bags.

Litter from the picnickers on the western shore of Zandvlei is blown across the vlei and onto Park Island in the prevailing summer winds.

18 people took 30 black bags of mainly plastic and other junk from out of the vlei in 2 hours. We worked on the south western shore. Mainly soft plastic and foil packaging material was picked up.
A TV tube was an unusual item found, along with a large truck tyre. Washing machine parts seem to make there way into Zandvlei every year.

We photographed 3 sample bag contents and will record the description of the items on the spreadsheet to compare it with last year. There was less litter this year as the City contractors had removed some rubbish about 2 months ago.

Polystyrene cups and food containers were very evident.          The TV tube hauled out of the reeds.

We have some practical ideas and plan to generate an Education Programme for the local day picnickers on the western shores of Zandvlei. If you would like to help please contact Gavin Lawson.
