Zandvlei trust

 Water Day celebration – Litter Cleanup on 25 March 2006. 

A Zandvlei Trust community initiative working with the City of Cape Town.

To celebrate National Water, we decided to do a litter cleanup on Park Island. Much litter lands up from the picnickers in the summer months on the shores. Then in the winter during the storms if the net across the Sand River does not hold, all sorts of rubbish comes onto the shores of Park Island.

43 people took 75 black bags of mainly plastic and other junk from out of the vlei in 2 hours. We worked on the western shore of Park Island which is approx. 500 meters long. A washing machine lining was removed, a car wheel and tyre with tubeworm starting to grow on it was removed. Plastic milk and bread crates, timber of all descriptions, plastic covered cables, pool filter pipes, a number of shoes, foam rubber, hats, 25 litre containers, plastic drums, a watering can.

The rubbish sorters – Anita Flockhart, Cherry Giljam, Warren Flockhart, Una Hartley and Vincent Marincowitz took 5 sample bags from the pile of 75 and opened the contents onto a sheet, so that we could record what was found. 

We photographically recorded the contents and will generate a spreadsheet of what we found. We plan to take this information to the Packaging Industry, Retail Industry, the Press and generate an Education Programme for the local day picnickers on the western shores of Lakeside. The Local and Provincial Government depts will be contacted with the outcomes and our suggestions. The local Ward 64 Council will also be notified.
