Muizenberg comes alive in October with the 5th edition of its annual festival that celebrates a place brimming with creativity, culture and innovative citizen action.

The Festival takes place between the 1 and 14 October, and features a range of activities, cultural experiences, dialogues, concerts, collaborative public performance, and incredible homegrown art. The Zandvlei Trust will be well represented at the environmental education marquee on the green in Muizenberg between the Promenade and Beach Road, right next to the swimming pool area.

The Muizenberg Festival is us having fun whilst we create the Muizenberg we want to live in. We want a great Muizenberg – where there is cohesion, foresight, and fun. We intend our activities to enhance a pragmatic response to our collective vision, build working models and solutions to socio-economic challenges,and lead to a better and safer place to live in.

This year’s theme, Senza Amaza, which translates to: “We are making Waves” and demonstrates the greater Muizenberg community’s interest in making an impact together and helping to create greater awareness for themes ranging from social cohesion and inclusive enterprise to environmental custodianship and water security.

Three different activities for Mandela Day on 18th June 2018 :

• The kids had to clear up the vegetable garden in the afternoon and planted the plants they received when visiting Kirstenbosch as part of the Eco-buddies outing coordinated by Zulfa Booth of CTEET (Cape Town Environmental Education Trust). They had previously had an outing to the Aquarium which they absolutely loved. The learners selected for Eco-buddies have to earn the right to go on outings by working in the vegetable garden.

• Deen Singh who was for many years headed the building project section for Projects Abroad, arrived unexpectedly with a French girl who was a former volunteer with Projects Abroad. . She specially requested Deen to take her to VHCC with 2 friends. They made lunch for the kids. About 50 kids were fed, but because some shooting was heard they had to leave in a hurry.

This last Tuesday the kids could go to surfing again after a long break mostly during the holidays as there was no shooting on Monday and Tuesday until Wednesday afternoon.

The Zandvlei Estuary and all persons interested or affected by this Estuary have been asked to assume the brace position because there might well be the need for a crash landing.
 
Two major environmental disasters are hitting the Zandvlei Estuary almost simultaneously right now. Firstly on Thursday night – a main sewer pipe collapsed in the Vrygrond Area – this pipe is under dozens of shacks. The situation was being maintained by pumping the sewerage into trucks and no sewerage was entering the canals. However there has been violence in Vrygrond and the trucks which were pumping had to be withdrawn for safety of the staff and the vehicles.
 
The pipe is a very large sectional pipe and runs eastward towards the sewerage farm. Basically it is the Southern Suburbs’ sewerage.
 
So now sewerage is now entering the Sand River canal which leads into the Zandvlei Estuary which leads into False Bay adjacent to the Muizenberg beach.
 
A contractor has been appointed to repair the pipe but, at this stage, we have no details of how long the repairs will take.
 
Secondly, the picture of the Sand River canal is self-explanatory. It was taken on Friday 20th April and shows the condition of the canal as it is at present. A mass of organic matter and litter which are ready to be transported into the main body of the Zandvlei Estuary when the first storm arrives.
 
Again, we are told that because of the gangsters and violence in the areas where this canal flows, the City has not been able to clear the canals.
 
The Zandvlei mouth was opened on Sunday – it will remain open during this sewerage and litter crises. The sand plug near the mouth however means that there will be limited outflow to remove sewerage, litter and plant material.
 
All persons involved are currently trying to find ways to address this situation but for the moment the sewerage and litter will keep flowing.
 
Please advise all water users to be cautious, this is going to be a LOT of sewage.

I am happy to report that we have managed to successfully move the Raft from where it was bought to the Zandvlei Nature Reserve. ‘we’ actually means – the staff of the Nature Reserve! They moved it on Friday 6th April 2018.
 
As we have seen from the videos and reports from people like Kevin Rack, plastic and other litter lodges in the reed beds and in virtually any place that it can be caught up.
 
In discussions with Mark Arendse and the staff of the Reserve they expressed the need to have a water going vessel that they could access the reed beds from the water side to remove litter from the reeds.
 
Fortunately there was a raft for sale from one of the residents of Marina da Gama and after some negotiating the Zandvlei Trust was fortunate to be able to buy the raft and donate it to the Reserve for their use in the ongoing battle against litter in Zandvlei.
 
Hopefully this raft is going to answer their needs and is going to be put to good and regular use by the staff of the Reserve.
 
In the mean time the raft is going into ‘dry dock’ for a short spell to have its bottom cleaned and a few other adjustments made to it so that it is perfect for their purpose.

This day marks the date of the adoption of the Convention on Wetlands on 2 February 1971, in the Iranian city of Ramsar on the shores of the Caspian Sea.
 
Every year the Zandvlei Nature Reserve hosts this programme which is to make the community aware of the value of Wetlands. The schools in the South visit the Reserve for the programme and this is thanks to the Zandvlei Trust, who sponsor transport for the schools to attend the programme which comprises the following:

1. What is at a Wetland?
2. The value of Wetlands
3. How does a Wetland function?
4. Concern in a Wetland
5. Food chain
6. Ecosystem

Every learner is provided with a work sheet and any writing material they may need.

With the remainder of Lotto funding of some years ago, Zandvlei Trust has been able to continue paying the transport by bus of these learners from their schools to the Reserve and back.  In 2018 twelve groups from the following local primary schools – St Mary’s, Levana, Harmony, Christian David Moravian, Zerilda Park, Capricorn, Prince George and Lourrier (some schools bringing groups over two days)  with a total of over 600 learners came to the Reserve and had the benefit from this exciting project where they learnt about the importance of urban wetlands.

Urban wetlands: prized land, not wasteland – Reduce flooding

Wetlands act as giant sponges that absorb flood waters. Rivers, ponds, lakes and marshes soak up and store heavy rainfall. In coastal cities, salt marshes and mangroves work as a buffer against storm surges.

Replenish drinking water

Groundwater aquifers, rainwater and rivers are the source of almost all drinking water. Wetlands filter the water that seeps into aquifers, helping to replenish this important water source. Protecting rivers and limiting harmful run-off also helps safeguard the water supply.

Filter waste and improve water quality

The silt-rich soil and abundant plants in wetlands function as water filters, which absorb some harmful toxins, agricultural pesticides and industrial waste. Urban wetlands also help treat sewage from households.

Improve urban air quality

Wetlands radiate moist air thanks to their high water levels and lush plant life. This naturally cools the air in the local surroundings; a relief both in tropical cities and in extremely dry climates.

Promote human well-being

When preserved as green spaces in cities, wetlands offer residents a space for recreation and access to diversity of plant and animal life. Studies confirm that interacting with nature reduces stress and improves our health.
 

Enable people to earn a living

Many types of fish spawn and breed in wetlands, making them popular fishing grounds. Wetlands provide reeds and grasses for weaving, medicinal plants and fruits; all valuable goods for local residents. She also painted the inside walls of the Environmental Education Centre in the Zandvlei Nature Reserve. Her paintings in all cases depict some of the wildlife which occurs in the Reserve.
 

Claire (Care OneLove) is a graffiti mural artist & illustrator based in Muizenberg, Cape Town. She is slowly transforming drab buildings, not only in Muizenberg, but in many parts of the City. Many of her paintings have an environmental theme to them. Show Claire a blank wall and she is in her element!
